Choosing the Right Doors for Your Home

Whether you are tempted by period doors, such as Victorian doors, 1930s doors or ledged and braced doors, the same considerations apply.
Base your decision on the wood you want the doors to be made of,engineered or pitch pine, glazed or solid, traditional or with fire protection, . Another thought is that, in the UK, if you make changes to a listed building, planning permission is often needed, and you will need to contact your local planning department. You may need to confine your choice to period doors.

One tip is that if you have Georgian or Victorian doors and want to change these period doors to create a more modern look, it is worth hanging on to the original period doors and storing them well, just in case you change your mind and want to revert to the original style. You can also then offer potential buyers the chance to install the original doors if and when you move.

You will also need to be sure that whatever you install meets all building and fire regulations. If you are choosing doors with glass in them such as the Victorian doors or the 1930s doors, it should meet BS6206, the standard for toughened glass in the UK.

When choosing doors like ledge and brace doors their are two basic options. Hand made solid doors with solid timber boards or engineered. The latter are constructed with a solid timber core overlaid with oak veneers. These doors have the advantage of being very stable and less likely to twist or split.

1930s and 1920s doors

The pitch pine door is a traditionally made door with mortice and tenon joints and solid pitch pine throughout. The other doors are engineered with solid timber cores overlaid with A grade veneers. Engineered doors are very stable and are designed to limit warping splitting and small changes in size with the seasons.

1950s Doors

They are constructed with a solid timber core overlaid with A grade veneers. The panels are flat with a square edge finish and no panel moulding.
